The Industrial Relations Society of Queensland has kindly extended an invitation to IRSV members to join their first webinar of 2024 taking place on Thursday, 21 March 2024 at 1pm.

Hear from colleagues from the National Tertiary Education Union about how they secured leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment provisions and more using collective bargaining as a mechanism to improve working conditions while striving to reduce inequality in Australian universities.

Sharlene Leroy-Dyer 

Senior Lecturer 

University of Queensland

Dr Sharlene Leroy-Dyer is a Saltwater woman, with family ties to the Dharug, Awabakal, Garigal and Wiradyuri nations.  Sharlene was the first Aboriginal academic to gain a PHD from the University of Newcastle Business School.  She is a Senior Lecturer in employment relations and the inaugural Director of the UQ Business School Indigenous Business Hub. Sharlene’s current research areas include Closing the Gap on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander disadvantage in Education and Employment, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander labour history, and Aboriginal involvement in the trade union movement.

Sharlene is the Chair of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander Policy Committee of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) and has served for over 15 years as an elected officer in various positions at a Branch, Division and National level. Sharlene is also the Deputy Chair of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Committee.

As an Aboriginal activist and unionist, Sharlene is passionate about improving the educational and employment outcomes for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Anthony Hack

Industrial Officer

National Tertiary Education Union

Anthony Hack is a Jaadwa man of the Wotjobaluk Nation. He is an Industrial Officer with the Queensland Division of the National Tertiary Education Union. Anthony has worked in the union movement for the past 13 years in various roles, including some time with other unions such as the CPSU, MEAA, ACTU and CFMEU.
